The Office of Communications plays a central role in the work of the Open Society Foundations by coordinating and strengthening the public presence of the global network and by helping to advance relevant issues. Communications works to raise Open Society’s public profile by promoting the network’s many noteworthy achievements as well as responding to attacks from opponents of open society around the world. The department employs media outreach, publications, and the web to assist dozens of Open Society foundations and programs in their communications efforts.
Job Profile
This role sits within the internal communications team and is responsible for contributing to the development and delivery of Open Society’s internal communications strategy from an online perspective.

The managing editor will provide editorial oversight and strategic direction for the Open Society global intranet—a key collaborative tool for the network’s internal communications. The editor will lead and shape online engagement strategies; generate content ideas; write and edit copy; manage editorial projects; oversee production schedules and content calendars; coordinate intranet content contributors; plan and design information architectures; and project manage technical developments.

The managing editor must be a digital problem-solver who can identify issues before they become problems. The editor will have a passion for open society issues, expert knowledge of digital content and media for internal and collaborative purposes, and must enjoy working as part of an interdisciplinary, cross-departmental team. Typical duties and responsibilities may include the following:
  • Conceive, write, edit, and publish engaging content for the Open Society global intranet, and associated digital properties;
  • Maintain digital content calendars and manage editorial workflows;
  • Coordinate a network-wide team of content contributors and liaise with stakeholders across offices to ensure that intranet content is complementary, clear, and accessible to global audiences;
  • Advise content owners and authors on content structure, and ensure coherence with Open Society’s principles and policies and brand and editorial style guidelines;
  • Train and support content authors to use the content management system;
  • Develop innovative strategies for reaching and engaging internal audiences;
  • Regularly evaluate usage data and provide reports to relevant stakeholders;
  • Conduct ongoing user evaluations and testing to ensure the intranet is meeting the needs of its users;
  • Provide recommendations for technical improvements of the intranet and project manage implementation;
  • Act as an internal resource, working with staff to increase digital media literacy and capacity within the organization.

    Candidate Profile:
  • 8-10 years of experience in web content creation and management and web editing;
  • 5-7 years of experience in content strategy and engagement for websites;
  • Expert knowledge of digital communications, in particular emerging trends of intranets;
  • Understanding of content development for global audiences;
  • Awareness of web accessibility and usability best practices;
  • Strong news judgment and ability to rapidly distill and curate information;
  • Superior English-language editorial and writing skills;
  • Experience with Content Management Systems and HTML; and knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and other creative software;
  • Strong project management skills, in particular of technical projects;
  • Experience of working in a large, global, and complex organization;
  • Diplomatic manner and ability to adapt to a range of cultures and experiences in interacting with program management, colleagues at all levels, contacts, and the public.

  • A commitment to team working and a willingness to contribute to cross-departmental initiatives
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college/university or equivalent experience;
