Position description

This position is located in the Northeast Asia Division, Office of Analysis for East Asia and the Pacific, Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR/EAP/NA).  This division is responsible for analysis of classified and open source information concerning the political, diplomatic (including bilateral relations with the United States), socio-economic, and cultural affairs of Japan, South Korea, and North Korea.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as an Intelligence Research Specialist responsible for all-source intelligence analysis of North Korean leadership dynamics; political issues, entities, and institutions; and foreign and security policy.
  • Responsible for coverage of South Korean political, diplomatic and security issues as backup to the senior South Korea analyst.
  • Identifies and reports on significant trends and/or activities with implications for U.S. foreign policy objectives.
  • Supports the regional and functional bureaus of the Department responsible for the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy.
  • Serves as a recognized subject matter expert, briefing senior officials throughout the U.S. Government and, when necessary, foreign representatives.
  • At the GS-12 level, the incumbent performs essentially the same duties as outlined above however, the scope and complexity of assignments are of less responsibility and independence and receives closer than normal supervision than the GS-13 level.

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Obtain/maintain eligibility to access Sensitive Compartmented Information
  • One year probationary period, unless excepted by regulation.
  • Incumbent will be subject to random drug testing.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all the required qualification requirements, including education and any selective placement factors described below by the closing date of this announcement.

APPLYING FOR THE GS-12:

Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service which provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience providing analysis of events, trends and national security issues.
  • Experience providing advice and consultation in defining intelligence collection.
  • Experience assisting with drafting policy memorandum, briefing materials, and position papers.

There is no substitute of education for specialized experience for the GS-12 position.

APPLYING FOR THE GS-13:

Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service which provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience analyzing and evaluating economic data from a variety of sources.
  • Experience drafting policy memorandum, briefing materials, and position papers for use by senior officials.
  • Experience preparing intelligence assessments.

There is no substitute of education for specialized experience for the GS-13 position.
