Position description

The Senior International Relations Officer (Africa) leads on the provision of specialist advice and coordination across the College for its engagement with a region that is of major importance to Imperial.  The role will have a particular focus on supporting engagement with Sub-Saharan Africa.  With a strong knowledge of the higher education and research landscape, you will monitor and report on trends and developments, and advise on opportunities and risks that emerge.  You will also provide advice to senior College representatives on building strategic engagement across the region, in order to bring mutual benefit to Imperial, partner institutions and national governments.

Imperial’s strategy for 2015-2020 emphasises the importance of international collaboration, placing it at the core of the College’s mission. Working closely with colleagues in the International Relations Office (IRO), as well as the College’s senior management and four Faculties, the Senior International Relations Officer (Africa) will play a central role as in supporting the development and delivery of Imperial’s international engagement strategy.

Duties and responsibilities

  • You will lead on the coordination of the College’s emerging Sub-Saharan Africa strategy, working closely with senior academics and the Vice President (International) to make strategic, evidence-based recommendations about future initiatives

  • You will lead on the management of key external relationships in the regions. You will be involved in the planning and briefing for high-level inward visits, as well as visits to the region by senior College representatives, including the President and Vice President (International).

  • You will build and maintain strong networks for the College: these will include representatives of higher education institutions, national governments and funding organisations, both in the regions and the UK.


  • We are looking for a candidate with a strategic and analytical mind-set and with a successful track record of working consultatively to develop strategies

  • Expertise and/or experience of living/working in one or more Sub-Saharan African countries, and relevant knowledge of the education, science, and innovation environment(s) in the region

  • Practical experience in the international higher education sector and relevant language skills are a distinct advantage, but we would welcome applications from suitably qualified individuals with relevant experience in government and the private sector.

  • Flexibility in working arrangements, a proven ability to be a ‘self-starter’ and strong cultural awareness are essential. The post-holder will be required to work closely with senior and academic colleagues to enhance current relations with external stakeholders (rather than replacing or cutting across them) and excellent ambassadorial, organisational, team-working and communication skills are essential.
