Position description

The History Department at SUNY Geneseo is seeking applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a focus on African history to begin August 2019. Duties include:

• Teach a range of History courses at the undergraduate level, including and especially courses that cover African history, and related subjects not currently covered by department faculty
• Teach skills-based seminars that include research methods and/or historiography
• Teach general education courses outside History, including courses in humanities and first-year critical writing seminar
• Conduct research and publish in area of expertise 
• Contribute to pedagogical and curricular innovation, including work with digital scholarship or methods
• Provide academic advisement to students
• Mentor and supervise undergraduate research and other projects
• Contribute to governance through service at the department and college level
• Contribute service to the discipline, university, and community

This position will join a Global Studies learning community of new assistant professors designed to support and enhance interdisciplinary collaborations in teaching, scholarship, and cross-campus conversations.


• PhD in History conferred by August 2019
• Expertise in African history 
• Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level in history
• Record of scholarly production and evidence of a clear plan for future research
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working/teaching environment
• Experience with or potential to contribute to Black Studies, International Relations, Environmental Science, and other interdisciplinary programs

Preferred Qualifications

• Expertise with and interest in application of digital tools in the humanities
• Potential to teach general education courses in humanities and first-year critical writing
