Position description

As the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) helps leaders prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. The EIU is the global standard in providing quality, actionable intelligence to the public and private sector, assessing issues that impact the marketplace for over two hundred countries.

We are recruiting a Senior Sub Editor with responsibility for the Asia portfolio of print and electronic products within the Country Publishing division. Responsibilities will include sub editing and publishing daily events-driven articles through our content management system and managing the regional workflow in accordance with daily, weekly and monthly deadlines, reporting to the Manager, Sub Edit.


How you will contribute:

  • Improve text by identifying inconsistencies and errors (both language and content) and resolving ambiguous passages in conjunction with the analyst
  • Manage the on-screen sub editing, complying with the company house style; this includes checking grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Check internal consistency of statistical data
  • Handle text, tables and charts within a custom-built template; you will ensure that the final formatting and page layout of both print and electronic products within the template are compliant with house style
  • Send both print and electronic products for final publication through the template
  • Use the content management system to sub edit and publish directly to the website
  • Ensure the quality of online events-driven pieces

In addition, you will be capable of:

  • Ensuring even workflow into Sub Edit by liaising with the Regional Director, Asia and the Principal Economist, Asia
  • Assisting other regional sub editors when uneven workflows arise
  • Attending regional and sub edit meetings
  • Handling the regional daily, weekly and monthly schedules through Sub Edit
  • Assisting the manager with the scheduling through Sub Edit to Production of CRS ratings reports within the Asia region
  • Training new regional sub editors, in conjunction with the manager


The ideal skills for this role are:

  • A degree or equivalent (ideally in English, Political Science, Politics, Economics, International Relations or related subject)
  • Relevant work experience in a sub editing role
  • International commercial exposure within a publishing environment
  • Knowledge of custom-built templates, including formatting and page layout
  • An interest in, or basic understanding of, macroeconomic analysis, politics and international affairs
  • Intermediate Word and Excel 
  • A good command of the English language and overall good communication skills
  • Knowledge of and interest in Asia and Australasia
  • An ability to work to tight deadlines and deliver quality output
  • An ability to assess the level of sub editing needed for each report and to detect internal inconsistencies
  • Attention to detail with a high level of numeracy
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Self-motivation
