Position description

The Assistant Director, Board Relations is a fundraising professional who supports the Vice President, Development and President with their board engagement and successfully meets fundraising goals for board participation in the Board Annual Fund, the Global Leadership Awards Dinner, the Second Century Campaign, and other Council efforts. With an 85-member Board of Directors, the Assistant Director is the lead on the planning and logistics for 20-30 Board committee meetings per year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Meet the Board Annual Fund revenue goal and solicit financial support for the Global Leadership Awards Dinner, the Second Century campaign, and other Council activities 
  • Support board members in their efforts to make connections on behalf of the Council with potential supporters/funders, including organizing receptions, dinners, and other events for prospects
  • Research, identify, and recommend board members who could increase their support through additional annual giving or campaign support
  • Staff and lead the production of materials for all board events including meetings of the Board, the Executive Committee, annual orientation for new directors, the Nominating and Governance Committee, board retreats, and dinners
  • Administer and fine-tune annually the board survey, committee selection process, and conflict of interest declarations
  • Work with the communications team on the President’s monthly note to the board and communicate extensively with individual board members; become well-versed about Council board member interests and areas of expertise
  • Prepare the President and members of the senior management team for meetings with board members, including providing information about their engagement, financial support, and relevant corporate data, if applicable 
  • Ensure that notes from board and committee meetings are accurate, include clear next steps with deadlines, and are circulated soon after meetings
  • Maintain the Council’s By-Laws, facilitate any necessary amendments or modifications, and advise Council leadership on adherence to Council By-Laws and board policies
  • Manage a board relations officer
  • Attend and support Council activities and programs with strong board member presence including some evening and early morning hours; provide additional support at other Council events approximately 3 – 4 times monthly (registration, ushering, etc.)
  • Perform other projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • 5+ years fundraising experience, preferably in major gifts and/or corporate relations; campaign experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Understanding of Chicago’s civic and business communities
  • Ability to initiate and build relationships with philanthropic leaders, next generation donors, family foundations, and other high profile individuals 
  • Experience managing staff and multiple projects concurrently under tight timelines
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in global affairs
  • Superior verbal, written, and listening communication skills
  • Superb interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with people of all levels using courtesy and discretion, ensuring confidentiality when required 
  • Self-starter, driven to achieve and exceed financial goals
  • Creativity, flexibility, and problem-solving; thrives in fast-paced and dynamic environment  
  • Keen attention to detail; well-honed organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to learn and use the Council’s donor database; Salesforce and Diligent experience preferred
  • Ability and willingness to work evening and early morning events and travel occasionally beyond downtown Chicago
