A core strategy for UNICEF USA’s movement building and engagement efforts focuses on increasing volunteer and community engagement, expanding in scope and reach in order to raise awareness, take action and develop global citizens to support UNICEF’s mandate within the U.S. and around the world. UNICEF USA actively seeks to further build and extend UNICEF’s domestic imprint, with a focus on global citizenship and elevating the voices of young people. We seek to organize and inspire our communities to take action for the world’s children by engaging local groups and cultivating awareness.

 

Associate, Community Engagement, Washington D.C.

The Associate, Community Engagement is a full-time position that works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to elevate and expand the UNICEF USA presence and network in Washington, D.C. by providing volunteers and community partners with the resources and opportunities to speak out, build community, advocate, and fundraise for UNICEF in the Washington, D.C. metro area. The position will report to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Managing Director and the Community Engagement Team based in NY or Chicago, and work closely with internal teams and initiatives such as the Youth Engagement, Advocacy & Engagement, Public Policy & Advocacy, Humanitarian Emergencies, and Marketing & Communications to help develop and execute the region’s engagement and advocacy strategy. 

 

Key Responsibilities/Outcomes (include but are not limited to):

  • Lead and support Washington, D.C.’s UNICEF UNITE Council — UNICEF USA’s grassroots organizing structure – through the day-to-day management of volunteers, tools and activations in line with the domestic engagement strategy, campaigns, moments, and calls to action.
  • Recruit, select, train, steward and recognize volunteers for leadership roles on the UNICEF UNITE Council.
  • In collaboration with Regional Managing Director, lead on developing and cultivating local community based, governmental, and university partnerships within the Washington, D.C. metro area that advance the organization’s strategic engagement and advocacy goals.
  • Contribute to the development and testing of localized approaches to implementation of the Child Friendly Cities Initiative within Washington, D.C. metro area, including the engagement of local governments and other organizations to prioritize the needs of children and elevate the voices of youth in local governance and decision-making.
  • Attend and participate in local coalition and network meetings related to children and global issues on behalf of UNICEF USA.
  • Lead planning and execution of regional volunteer and supporter Meet Ups and Summits in Washington, D.C. and other events, as applicable, that bring thought partners and volunteers together to discuss and support child rights issues.
  • Assist in managing regional social media pages and communication plans for engaging with volunteers and local community partners. 
  • Track volunteer and community engagement activities and impact through UNICEF USA’s constituent management system and other means, including contributions to UNICEF Clubs recruitment, advocacy impact, volunteer recruitment, lead generation, and soft credit toward Community Fundraising (Development) revenue goals.
  • Support local volunteer activations and key organizational initiatives where required.
  • Share best practices, lessons learned and process improvements and incorporate them into standard volunteer management business rules as needed.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must have experience with community organizing, volunteer management, and a passion for inspiring others
  • Undergraduate degree and/or equivalent experience; professional or academic background in advocacy, civic engagement, grassroots organizing, international affairs, volunteer management or related fields 
  • Extensive knowledge of the Washington, D.C. civic community
  • Successful candidate must also have a demonstrated interest in and knowledge of children’s rights and international issues, as well as a commitment to public service 
  • Ideal candidate will be a resourceful and energetic self-starter with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work autonomously with attention to detail 
  • Innovation, creativity, and a team player mentality are necessary for success in this role
  • Demonstrated ability to lead effective presentations and workshops and ease in public speaking for groups large and small
  • Proven ability to work well with a diverse group of people in a team setting; additional language(s) a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, including administrative tasks, and priorities while consistently meeting deadlines and working across teams
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written; experience working with cross-country teams a plus
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes weekend and evening commitments and travel
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office (Outlook- 2010 preferred, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Must have reliable access to transportation
  • Assisting with other support responsibilities and special projects as needed 

 

Qualifications:

·         Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years related experience with direct donor/constituent contact, event planning, or other relevant employment preferred

·         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, both written and verbal

·         Proven ability to prioritize; work independently; handle multiple, complex tasks simultaneously; and to generate pragmatic solutions to challenges

·         Strong customer service approach to interactions with colleagues and partners; ability to navigate complex environments, and help build relationships with a variety of stakeholders

·         Strong organizational and administrative skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

·         Ability and enthusiasm to further UNICEF USA’s mission

·         Must demonstrate UNICEF USA Core Values: Trust, Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Teamwork, and Service

 

Must possess current and valid US Work Authorization and be eligible to work for any US employer without sponsorship.
