Caras Alegres is a small non-profit that focuses on children in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Xela, Las Rosas (Zone 5).Las Rosas is an impoverished neighbourhood where the majority of families live at or below the poverty line. This lack of economic opportunities contributes to problems such as alcoholism, teenage-pregnancies, and limited healthcare, etc. For this reason, we strive to support and empower the community of Las Rosas every day.

Our staff: Caras Alegres operates with a 3-person administrative team; General Director, Programme and Volunteer Director and Development Director. Each employee has a certain area of responsibilities, however, it is extremely important for the dynamics of the team and operations that everyone is willing to work closely with colleagues and has a willingness to step in where needed in a given situation.

Our kitchen is managed by two local women and we also work with an internal accountant and an educational assistant who works in the afternoon programme.  

Our beneficiaries: We partner directly with 62 families, providing basic needs and educational opportunities to families that would otherwise not have them. Indirectly, around 230 people benefit from our activities.

Our mission: To improve the general welfare and position of children and families living in poverty, neglect and personal disintegration in Las Rosas, Quetzaltenango.

Our vision: To combat the negative effects of poverty and give children and their families a positive outlook towards the future.


Caras Alegres Tarde: This program is the core of our activities. From Monday to Thursday we open up our doors in the afternoon for children between 5 and 14 from the neighbourhood. We do sports, handicrafts and play different games with the children. One of the key motivations behind this program is the fact that it keeps up to 85 children of the streets.

Comedor Comunitario Infantil: The Community Lunch Room is our most recent project. It functions as an extension to Caras Alegres Tarde. 52 children are enrolled, and they come from Monday to Thursday to eat a nutritious lunch. The main incentive behind this project is the high levels of malnutrition among the children who attend.

Other Activities: We also manage a sponsorship program, celebrate birthdays once a month, hand out backpacks in the beginning of every school year, among other things.


Caras Alegres is looking for a full-time employee to fill our vacant position as Development Director. This role in Caras Alegres is the organisation´s link to the international community, to our private and cooperate donors, to partner non-profits, etc. For this reason, the person in this position must be a skilled communicator and have excellent interpersonal skills.

The palette of responsibilities is wide and includes:

  • Funds development: Grant writing, cultivation and maintenance of donor relations, report writing, year-end campaign and online crowdfunding.
  • Partnerships and strategic alliances: Development Director is first up when it comes to creating new alliances and partnerships with organisations, enterprises and other institutions. This includes advocacy and solid presentations of the organisation´s work, mission and vision. 
  • Organising and execution of local fundraising events in Quetzaltenango.  
  • Scholarships: The Development Director is responsible for processing and obtaining scholarships for youth and women in Cantón Xeúl. This also includes follow-ups with the scholarship recipients.
  • Take the lead on planning and execution of programme M&E activities.
  • Communication tasks: Quarterly MailChimp newsletters, administration of Facebook and Instagram page.
  • Updating and maintaining the organisation´s WordPress website.
  • Family visits in the community with the Executive Director.
  • Project and budget design.
  • Support the children and scholarship recipients with homework research.
  • Ongoing communication with Caras Alegres’ Board of Directors in The Netherlands and in Guatemala.
  • Depending on the candidate’s qualifications, the person can organize and carry out activities with the children.
  • Any other task that may emerge as part of the daily functioning of the organisation.


  • Minimum a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent practical experience) in International Development, International Relations, Business Administration, Communications or related field.
  • Related work experience; can include, but is not limited to, fundraising, non-profit administration, grant writing and/or similar.
  • Preferably experience working with community development, under-privileged populations and children.
  • Familiarity with Guatemalan (or similar) social, historical and cultural context is a plus.
  • Strong ethical, personal values that align with Caras Alegres’ vision and mission.
  • Fluency in English and advanced Spanish (oral and written) is required.
  • Well versed in Microsoft Office and able to comfortably and quickly learn how to use new databases.
  • Self-motivated with proven ability to lead, coordinate and facilitate good team dynamics.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to successfully handle matters with diplomacy and cultural sensitivity.
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Comfortable working in team as well as the capacity to work and move projects forward independently.
  • Flexible schedule with ability to work nights/weekends when needed (max. 10 times/year).
  • Creative and adaptable - readily willing to accept new tasks and responsibilities as needed.
  • Commitment of minimum one year is required.

  • 6 weeks of paid holidays per year (Easter week, Independence week in September, and month-long Christmas holidays).
