Purpose of the position
We are looking for a Policy Officer working on corporate liability, including mandatory Human Rights Due Diligence (mHRDD) to cover the period of an extended parental leave. The position is focused on advocacy and coalition building.
The Policy Officer will implement ECCJ’s strategic and operational plans on mHRDD, being one key element of corporate accountability. He/she will be in charge of ensuring that strategic goals are met and deadlines are respected.
In addition, he/she will support the internal communication within the membership of ECCJ, but also external coordination with other Brussels based organisations. This includes the organisation of events, liaising with a large number of partners and external experts and representing the organisation at events or in meetings. It also includes support in drafting funding applications and reporting to donors.
He/she will be:
- a highly motivated person with a hands-on approach, able to translate ECCJ’s strategy into concrete action;
- a strategic thinker sharing ECCJ’s vision for a better accountability of corporations;
- able to understand legislative developments EU level and their implications to ECCJ’s projects and advocacy work;
- a persuasive speaker capable of promoting ECCJ’s message and policy proposals in public and political debates;
- able to prioritise, working in an independent and structured way;
- able to work in a small international team, representing a broad range of member organisations, where some flexibility might be required.
ECCJ is currently stepping up its work in the field of mHRDD and there might be a possibility to prolong the engagement after one year.
- Update, refine and implement ECCJ’s mHRDD strategy;
- Develop positions and policy proposals;
- Identify research needs; implement research projects;
- Advocacy/lobby work;
- Suggest and co-organise workshops and public events;
- Representation where appropriate;
- Monitor and analyse policy developments;
- Communications in the defined policy areas (Tweeting, OP-eds, media outreach, etc.);
- Organise internal and external events related to thematic focus;
- Help developing advocacy tools;
- Coordinate the relevant working groups and mailing lists.
Coalition building tasks:
- Member relations and internal network development and communication;
- Updating and supporting the maintenance of ECCJ’s website;
- Further develop collaboration with other European and international organisations working on mHRDD;
- Organizing events (ECCJ’ s Annual General Assembly, workshops, webinars, etc.).
- A commitment to, and thorough understanding of the mission of ECCJ and its vision of corporate accountability and policy change;
- Ability to understand complex legal concepts and understanding of EU policy and legislation in the field of corporate accountability and mHRDD;
- A good understanding of the implications of European companies’ behaviour and impacts outside of Europe;
- At least 2 years’ experience in policy advocacy; preferably with knowledge and experience of the EU and its institutions, and preferably on corporate accountability related policies, ideally in the field of Human Rights Due Diligence;
- Experience in research and evaluation projects and outstanding analytical skills;
- Excellent communication skills - ability to articulate clear messages to different audiences;
- Complete fluency in English with proficiency in at least one other EU language;
- Ability and willingness to travel within Europe;
- Be a citizen of an EU member state or have a valid residence and work permit for Belgium.
The following are strong additional assets:
- Experience in working in a coalition or complex international/European organisation;
- Experience in liaising with stakeholders from different backgrounds (policy makers, civil society organisations, business, academics, etc.);
- Experience in organising events;
- Experience/understanding of working in or with a very small organisation;
- Expertise in international and/or European law.
- A gross monthly salary between 2800 Euros and 3200 Euros- depending on experience - on the basis of a full-time contract; and benefits: 13th month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, hospitalisation insurance, travel insurance and contribution to local transport costs;
