Position description

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is an independent international institute whose core mission is to undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace. Established in 1966, SIPRI provides data, analysis and recommendations, based on open sources, to policymakers, researchers, media and the interested public. SIPRI is seeking a Financial Coordinator for the Sahel and West Africa Programme. The Sahel/West Africa Programme conducts analyses of the key conflicts, security and peacebuilding issues affecting the Sahel—with a particular focus on the relationship between security and development—in cooperation with African civil society organizations and local research centres. The programme is part of SIPRI’s Conflict and Peace research cluster.

The Financial Coordinator will be a member of the Sahel and West Africa Programme and will report to the Head of Operations. They will be responsible for all financial and administrative aspects of EU projects implemented within the Programme. The Financial Coordinator will work in close consultation with SIPRI’s Financial team. An important aspect of the position is to provide support for the development of the programme by taking an active part in the acquisition strategy for new European Union (EU) projects.

The position is based in Stockholm but may occasionally involve travel to the Sahel/West Africa region.

Tasks and responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the Financial Coordinator will be:

  • Establish and coordinate the financial and administrative routines for EU projects within the Programme;
  • Maintain responsibility for all financial and administrative aspects of EU projects within the Programme;
  • Support the Programme’s partners’ capacity building in relevant fields (finance, organizational audits, administrative routines, meeting donor requirements);
  • Support the Programme’s fundraising strategy (proposal and grant writing).

Qualifications

The successful candidate should have the following experience and skills:

  • A university degree in disciplines and topics relevant to this post (accounting, finance etc.) and/or three years of experience in working with Finance, in a position such as Financial Coordinator or Grants Manager in an international environment;
  • Experience in project administration, budgeting and financial reporting, especially within EU-financed projects;
  • Fluency, both spoken and written, in French and English;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Previous working experience in Africa and/or with African civil society organizations will be considered an asset.

Starting from 1 January 2019, or as soon as possible. The appointment will be, initially, for a three-year period, and renewable. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
