Position description

The Solutions Journalism Network, a national non-profit organization, is catalyzing critical reporting about responses to social problems. Solutions journalism provides a framework, grounded in journalistic ethics and informed by today’s professional challenges, that enables journalists to cover society more comprehensively, revealing possibilities for civic agency and connection.

In SJN’s seven years, solutions journalism has become a credible reporting practice recognized for driving meaningful impact in society. Over 18,000 journalists have been exposed to our curriculum. More than 300 news organizations have engaged SJN to produce staff workshops, develop reporting projects, and consult on audience or community engagement activities.

SJN publishes a wide range of public-facing materials including resource guides, playbooks, blog posts, an annual report and more. These publications are produced by individuals across the organization, which means that the copy editor will be working with a range of individuals and teams to support their efforts and help them meet their deadlines. Assignments will be made on an as-needed basis and generally require immediate attention.

Role Description:
The copy editor will review publications for final sign off by an SJN staff member. These may include key SJN publications such as our annual report, blog posts, website, and other published materials. The copy editor will consistently apply AP style and SJN’s in-house style guide, ensuring that our copy is on-brand, free of jargon, understandable. The copy editor will also ensure that copy is free of grammatical and spelling errors.

This role will report to the Data & Intelligence team, which coordinates SJN’s information and tech needs, and will also work closely with other staff as assigned.

As Copy Editor, you will:

  • Thoroughly copy edit text for publication (including but not limited to: blog posts, webpage copy, curriculum, handouts, and various reports)
  • Collaborate with various members of the SJN team to assist them in improving copy under deadline
  • Work quickly and efficiently on deadline
  • Accommodate new editing needs as they emerge

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • At least 5 years working as a copy editor (in daily journalism preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of AP style. 
  • Adept at editing copy in ways that make it conversational, relatable and understandable to a wide audience
  • Ability to adhere to in-house style requirements 
  • Demonstrated experience in helping writers and editors improve and tighten copy under deadline
  • Ability to work quickly and under pressure
  • Working knowledge of journalism industry; experience in the nonprofit sector desirable
  • Excellent teamwork skills and strong work ethic
  • Nonprofit experience ideal
