Position description

The Louisiana Scholars' College, the state's selective-admission honors college of the liberal arts and sciences, located at Northwestern State University of Louisiana, seeks applications from broadly trained individuals to fill a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of History, Political Science, Sociology, or Social Thought, with an anticipated state date of August I 0, 2026.

Preference will be given to applicants with prior college level teaching experience, experience directing student research, and experience in honors education. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of scholarly achievement. Applicants should be committed to liberal arts education and willing to interact with colleagues and students from other fields in the arts and sciences to maintain and improve an integrated, multidisciplinary honors curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications

      • Shall be qualified to teach in field of study
      • Shall be effective in teaching the assigned subject material
      • Shall meet the required standards defined by the University
      • Shall be proficient in curriculum development, instruction, assessment, and academic advising
      • Shall hold a doctoral degree in History or a related field

Qualifications
The search committee will consider applicants who hold a completed Ph.D. in one of the following fields: History, Political Science, Sociology, or Social Thought. The College has special interest in a candidate capable of teaching texts from the pre-modem era.

Job Duties and Other Information

      • Be committed to excellence in teaching, service, and professional growth and scholarship
      • Teach all courses in a manner that promotes academic excellence
      • Submit course outlines and objectives
      • Utilize a variety of proven teaching methods appropriate to pedagogy
      • Evaluate students and report progress
      • Participate in periodic review of course materials
      • Maintain assigned class schedules and the required 10 hours of office hours per week as determined by the Director
      • Demonstrate knowledge of the goals and objectives of the program, College, and University
      • Serve as an advisor and mentor for students in the Louisiana Scholars' College
      • Direct undergraduate research and serve as a reader on honors theses
      • Participate in faculty meetings and serve on all appropriate program, College, and University committees
      • Maintain appropriate expertise and competencies through continued professional development and pursuit of scholarly activities, including grant writing, research, scholarly publication, and presentations
      • Represent the University in a professional manner in all activities and functions as determined by the President, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean, or Director (e.g., commencement, faculty institute, registration, and all called meetings)
      • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with federal laws and program, College, and University policies
      • Acknowledge and agree to comply with those mandates of the Constitution and laws of the State of Louisiana which regulate the activity and employment of state employees including but not limited to the "Code of Government Ethics," "LA R.S. 42: 1101 et seq.," and "Dual Office Holding and Dual Employment LA R.S. 42:61 et seq."
