BEUC – The European Consumer Organisation is currently looking for an Aviation and Rail Policy Officer to reinforce its Transport and Mobility team.
The tasks of the position will include:
The successful candidate will contribute to BEUC’s work, analysis and activities on aviation and rail policies. Depending on experience, responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring the implementation of the commitments for environmental claims made by the airlines towards the CPC authorities under the current BEUC and ensuring coherence with the transposition of future legislation;
- Conducting research on climate-related claims, such as onto the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, and collecting evidence of consumer acceptance and understanding of climate-related policies;
- Drafting, coordinating and disseminating policy and technical recommendations;
- Engaging in discussions with relevant stakeholders and policymakers around rail ticketing and rail passenger rights;
- Sharing intelligence with BEUC members, partner organizations and industry players on how to make alternative and more sustainable transport modes of transport to air travel more attractive;
- Developing and maintaining contacts with EU policy makers, NGOs, academia, industry and other potential partners;
- Providing intelligence and assistance to BEUC’s membership on issues related to policies related to aviation and rail;
- Working closely with the Communications team on event organisation and public-facing aspects of campaigns, including press requests and social media activities;
- Duties may evolve according to the development of the team and its activities.
Qualifications
The main qualifications we are looking for are:
- A University degree (Master’s level) in Law, EU Law, Politics, or Environmental Sciences. Specialisation enabling a good understanding of EU aviation and rail policies would be an advantage;
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in aviation and/or rail policy at EU level, gained in a comparable environment (NGO, EU institution, public authority, EU trade association, etc.);
- A technical background or practical experience in the aviation and/or rail sectors would be an asset;
- Good knowledge of the EU institutions and their political and legislative decision-making processes is a must;
- A demonstrable ability to communicate complex technical concepts and policy information clearly and effectively;
- Excellent writing and communication skills in English; proficient knowledge of another EU language is an asset;
- Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to rapidly process information, including in new or unfamiliar policy areas;
- A highly organized and structured professional, capable of managing multiple projects and delivering results to deadlines;
- A strong interest in the work of civil society and non-governmental organisations and their role in EU policymaking, and in making consumer products sustainable;
- A commitment to working in an international, inclusive and diverse team, in alignment with BEUC’s values of openness, ambition, respect, and self-awareness.
What we offer:
- A full-time 12-month contract with a competitive salary package (salary, fringe benefits, extra-legal paid leave, flexible working hours, partial homeworking possibility), and the potential to be renewed;
- A gross monthly salary in the indicative range of €3.895 and €4.142 gross, depending on experience;

Location: As our contracts are subject to Belgian law, candidates must be committed to official registration in Belgium and working from our Brussels office. We offer teleworking possibilities from home or abroad, subject to our remote working policy and organisational needs.
