Position description
E3G is looking for a highly motivated and talented Senior Communications Officer to coordinate the E3G's wider communications work on clean economy in the EU, including industry and steel decarbonisation and lead on EFFSN communications. This role will be based in either E3G’s Brussels or Berlin office.

Role
This position will support E3G’s clean economy and lead the European Fossil-Free Steel Network (EFFSN) communications work. The role will contribute to E3G’s wider EU comms activities, reporting to the Director of Communications, E3G, working closely with the Head of the EFFSN in E3G’s capacity as co-convener of the EFFSN. It will work as part of the wider Comms Team and alongside the wider E3G clean economy, and EU Teams.
E3G’s Clean Economy work aims for a climate-neutral economy by shifting industrial and trade policy. This includes work on the politics and policies required to transition steel, cement and chemicals sectors to net-zero pathways. The successful candidate will work closely with the Clean Economy team’s efforts in Europe.
The European Fossil-Free Steel Network is comprised of over 200 civil society members from more than 90 NGOs, think tanks and campaigning organisations, working towards accelerating steel decarbonisation in Europe. The network has highly developed internal channels to communicate the latest updates on steel decarbonisation and pursues collaborative action among its members to jointly push for the cleanest and fastest possible decarbonisation of the European steel industry.
The role will lead on the implementation and continued development of the network's overarching communication strategy; co-develop compelling, data-driven narratives and campaign messages to influence decision-makers and amplify strategic resources from members to the network.
The successful candidate should have a strategic eye for a strong story, be good at stakeholder and CSO coordination and influencing work within the membership network.
Key responsibilities
- Communication Strategy and Planning: Working with the Comms Team, the Clean Economy team, and with EFFSN members to lead, develop and deliver comprehensive communication strategies and campaigns that effectively communicate research findings, policy recommendations, and thought leadership on steel sector decarbonisation and build on the yearlong EFFSN Communications Strategy developed in 2025 for implementation in 2026 and beyond. To develop these taking into account the wider E3G strategy for the transition to a clean economy including industry and steel decarbonisation;
- Messaging and Storytelling: co-develop with the EFFSN communications working group compelling and impactful messages, stories, and narratives for different comms channels, that resonate with our various audiences as the go to for CSOs in the steel space, including steel producers, workers, policymakers, financial institutions, media outlets, civil society organisations, and communities living around steelworks, electric vehicle enthusiasts or financial analysts. Ensure that communication materials are clear, concise, and accessible to diverse stakeholders;
- Media Relations: Bring in understanding of the media landscape at EU and member state level into the Comms Working Group of the EFFSN to direct communications officers from the network towards appropriate media outlets. Proactively identify opportunities to pitch stories for EFFSN members and relevant E3G experts and spokespeople;
- Stakeholder Engagement within the EFFSN: Lead the work of the EFFSN Comms Working Group, engage with network members outside of this group by attending and leading comms working group and other important network calls, engaging with other EFFSN working groups and reaching out proactively to members to offer comms advice and strategy. Develop plans for the EFFSN members to best represent EFFSN’s work at conferences, workshops, and relevant events to establish relationships and enhance the network’s profile;
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Track and analyse the impact of EFFSN Members’ communications efforts, including media coverage, social media tracking and stakeholder feedback. Provide regular reports as part of E3G and stakeholder reporting to senior staff and funders on the effectiveness of communication strategies and identify areas for improvement.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will bring relevant professional experience with progressive levels of responsibilities and a track record of achievements in the following areas:
- Relevant, high quality professional communications experience, minimum five years with a demonstrable impeccable level of written and spoken English. Fluency in German desired; fluency in other European languages will be considered a plus;
- Proven experience in working in networks with a strong track-record of leading on internal communications and stakeholder management. Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders, researchers, journalists, and civil society organisations;
- Proven experience in developing and implementing communication strategies, events and campaigns. Understanding of digital comms tools and platforms, including social media management, website content management systems, and email marketing;
- Experience in media relations, including pitching stories, organising press events, and securing media coverage;
- Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and engaging manner;
- Good understanding of climate change issues, and the policy landscape and interest in industry decarbonisation.

Berlin
- The indicative salary range in Berlin is €39,858 - €44,000 annually, dependant on experience;
- BahnCard50 travel cover.
Brussels
- The indicative salary range in Brussels is €3,274 to €3,499 monthly reference (annually €45,575 - €48,700), dependant on experience, with holiday pay and a 13th month;
- Mobile phone and contract, lunch and eco vouchers, hospitalisation and travel insurance, travel expense reimbursement (bicycle or public transport).
E3G is unable to provide any relocation assistance to candidates who would need to move in order to take up this position. Occasional international travel may be required from time to time.
