This position is located in the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC. The position reports to the UNOCC Watch Room Coordinators, under the supervision of the Deputy Director. The UNOCC is a multi-party entity reporting to the USG for Policy in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG), and on peacekeeping matters, with oversight from the USG for Peace Operations. The UNOCC also receives strategic oversight from a Client Board of principals from each its client entities. The UNOCC provides global situational awareness, crisis and risk management, as well as facilitates cross-pillar analysis and decision-making in the UN. The UNOCC is operationally positioned under the Office of Coordination and Shared Services (OCSS) between the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and the Department of Peace Operations.
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Gathers, selects and analyses information on countries and regions of particular interest to DPO, EOSG and other system leadership. Process and compile relevant information and data received from relevant UN entities, including peacekeeping and special political missions; communications and publications, including from think tanks and the press. • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current events relating to political/security issues in countries and regions of interest to the UN system and its mandates. • Keeps abreast of latest political, security and economic trends and developments in the various areas of interest and provides inputs on these issues to senior officials. • Monitors national and regional level political developments, linking with field mission and UN agencies active on the ground. • Assists Watch Room coordinators to provide technical and substantive backstopping to Joint Operations Centres (JOC) in peacekeeping missions and their equivalents in special political missions and assists with the related training for field staff. • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters. • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations. • Selects, classifies and stores data for analysis on relevant countries or regions. • If requested, participates in assistance missions to JOCs in peacekeeping missions within assigned area of responsibility. • Participates in provision of secretariat services crisis management team meetings and other relevant bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions. • Works some non-traditional hours as part of the UNOCC Watch Room shift system, including occasional night duty and weekend shifts (with compensation). • Performs other related duties as required.
