Position description

At a time of rapid and accelerating global warming, we have no time to lose to turn down the global thermostat. Carbon Market Watch is uniquely placed both to monitor efforts to slash emissions and to propose policy paths that will lead to a truly carbon-neutral future.

Carbon Market Watch’s mission is to ensure that carbon pricing and other climate policies cut pollution and drive a just transition towards sustainable societies. Given the urgency of halting the climate breakdown, we want market-based climate policies to fulfil their promise and be used in a wise combination with regulatory and incentivising measures.

Purpose of the position

We are recruiting a dynamic communications officer for a part-time position (80%). The communications officer will be based in Belgium and work partly out of our office in Brussels and remotely from home. They will report to our communications director and will support communication activities across our work programme.

Tasks and responsibilities

Below are the main tasks and responsibilities related to the position:

General communications skills

      • Conceptualise and plan communications activities;
      • Convey complex technical content clearly and plainly;
      • Help organise outreach and advocacy campaigns;
      • Monitor and report on the impact of communications activities, including Meltwater, Google Analytics, etc.

Writing and editing skills

      • Identify, develop and sell stories;
      • Develop engaging messages for different audiences;
      • Write high-quality and punchy copy, including articles, press releases and other relevant materials;
      • Edit and proofread with a high level of skill, accuracy and proficiency content produced by others.

General support to the team

      • Help carry out stakeholder mapping and tracking of public institutions and actors;
      • Help maintain contact databases;
      • Support the organisation and follow-up of events and capacity-building activities.

Professional and Personal Attributes

Required skills and experience

      • At least three years of relevant communications work experience or a combination of experience and a degree in communications or journalism;
      • Strong organisational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines;
      • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team;
      • Flawless knowledge of written English.

Desirable

      • Journalistic or investigative research experience;
      • Knowledge of climate issues and EU and international climate policies;
      • Knowledge of EU decision-making processes and institutions;
      • Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage;
      • Knowledge of website management and social media.

What we offer

      • A part-time (0.8 FTE), one-year contract under Belgian law, with the possibility of renewal;
      • A competitive remuneration package in line with Brussels NGO standards: salary range from €3084 to €3368 gross/month depending in particular on years of experience; 13th month, lunch vouchers, eco-cheque, mobile phone package, public transport allowance, home-working allowance, and 30 holidays of which five during end of year office closing period. Complementary pension plan with employer contributions;
      • Starting date: January 2026 (as soon as possible).
