The Committee to Protect Journalists promotes press freedom worldwide and defends the right of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal. CPJ ensures the free flow of news and commentary by taking action wherever journalists are attacked, imprisoned, killed, kidnapped, threatened, censored, or harassed.

Background

The Committee to Protect Journalists seeks a morning editor to join its small team responsible for the organization’s editorial content. The morning editor is a new full-time, exempt position under a one-year contract with potential for renewal. The preferred location is CPJ’s Washington, D.C., office. The morning editor reports to the editorial director.

The morning editor will edit and manage the flow of daily content including news alerts, letters of protest, and other news and research. The editor will work closely with other editors, the communications and advocacy team, and CPJ programs to advance the organization’s mission.

Responsibilities include:

  • Edit news alerts and other daily content for CPJ’s website. Track and edit research on killed and imprisoned journalists.

  • Edit for content and structure as well as grammar and style

  • Choose photos and write captions.

  • Copy-edit special reports and other content as assigned

  • Adhere to tight deadlines, juggling several pieces of copy at once

  • Work with writers of varied experience and English-language skills

  • Occasional weekend or evening work

Qualifications

Essential skills and experience:

  • At least three years’ experience as an editor for a news agency, website, or paper, or broadcast outlet

  • Experience in basic HTML coding and in using content management systems such as WordPress or Moveable Type

  • The instinct to recognize sensitive or potentially libelous issues and raise them for discussion

  • Strong organizational skills

  • The initiative to identify tasks and to work independently

Preferred skills and experience:

  • Background in international news

  • Working with writers whose first language is not English

  • Familiarity with AP style

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits include 100% employer-paid health, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance.
